About the event
Closely following the format of a Tenebrae service, our program of Lenten Lessons and Anthems is also partly based on the Anglican tradition of Lesson & Carols. Consisting of a series of scripture readings interspersed with choral works and congregational hymns, this service includes the extinguishing of candles (one after each reading) to symbolically represent the coming darkness of Jesus' death. The contemplative nature of this event provides a meaningful time for introspection and reflection, regardless of religious affiliation (or lack thereof). The service ends in silence, and all who attend are asked to remain silent until they have exited the building.
There is no admission charge; however, free-will offerings are strongly encouraged. All donations will additionally be matched by the Holy Cross Community to benefit local food-based charitable organizations, and are tax-deductible.
